April - STEC in Romania
At least 25 people were infected by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) with a link to a Romanian dairy plant.
The outbreak mostly affected children with 19 developing haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and three dying.
European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said information pointed towards the milk processing plant in Romania but never provided updated information.
The Romanian dairy plant disputed it was the source and testing in the country also raised doubts.
The EU Commission later said conditions to activate support measures for Romanian dairy farmers after the Italian alert had not been met in response to a written question from a Member of the European Parliament (MEP).
