April: Surveillance report on food and waterborne diseases
A report on food and waterborne diseases in the European Union and European Economic Area between 2010 and 2012 highlighted Listeria as a problem area.
Despite the relatively low number of cases caused by Listeria the average case fatality rate was 16%, for all other diseases looked at, the rate was below 1%, it found.
The report looked at campylobacteriosis, listeriosis, non-typhoidal salmonellosis, shigellosis, Shiga toxin/verocytotoxin producing E.coli (STEC/VTEC) infections, typhoid and paratyphoid fever and yersiniosis.
