Marcel Veenstra, marketing and communications manager at Sealpac, took GlobalMeatNews through just some of the products on its stand at Anuga FoodTec, which featured a wall display of new innovations, and a virtual supermarket. One of the packaging techniques demonstrated by the firm was its skinfilm ovenable packaging, which can be used for chicken, salmon, or even roasting meats, said Veenstra. While its AirPET Touch packaging, featuring a tray from Silver Plastics, has been specifically developed for use in the oven. The material used for the tray does not get hot, so consumers can take it out of the oven without the risk of burning their hands, said Veenstra.
He said that ‘roast in a bag’-style packaging systems were becoming increasingly popular across north-western Europe, for products such as chicken, due to the lower risk of contamination. He said he believed that "no touch cooking" was "something that will be a growing market".
In terms of trends, he said innovation used to all be about microwaveable packaging, but now the focus is on ovenable materials. Having said that, the company has also developed microwaveable ready-meal packaging using skinfilm, which means you get a clear view of what the meal will look like when cooked, which he said was currently available in gas stations in Finland, as well as in the USA. Some suppliers are now offering printed films, which offers greater opportunities for branding, he added.
