Pork recalled after banned hormone findings
2 July - Sweden: Danish Crown has withdrawn a batch of pork from the stores of Swedish supermarket chains ICA and Axfood because the meat may contain traces of banned hormone diethylstilbestrol (DES).
DES is a hormone previously used in pig breeding to enhance growth of the animals but has been prohibited for use as a growth promoter in the US since the late 1970s and in the EU since 1981.
The hormone was found in the urine of a pig slaughtered at one of the Danish Crown slaughterhouses.
Danish Crown said the recall affects about 11,504 pounds of pork.
The Swedish National Food Agency said there are no proven health hazard with the meat, but because the hormone is banned, it is necessary that the stores withdraw the product.
