Food Safety Recall round-up 16-22 March 2018
Packaging issue prompts illy coffee recall
Italy: Illycaffè has recalled canned coffee due to defective packaging.
Illy In Grani 250g with dates from 10/2019 to 2/2020 missing a valve on the bottom are affected.
This includes Caffè in Grani 250g Tostatura Media; Tostatura Scura; Decaffeinato; Monoarabica Brasile;
Monoarabica Etiopia and Monoarabica Guatemala.
The valve ensures removal of carbon dioxide naturally produced by the beans. Without it, the gas remains inside and can cause problems when the can is opened.
Illycaffè said packages subject to the recall are easily recognisable as they do not have a vent valve on the bottom so there is an abnormal swelling of the can. ">The firm added the error in the production process only affects the can; the coffee is safe to consume.
