Arsenic level in seaweed
Australia: Unique Health Products Pty is recalling seaweed due to arsenic being above the permitted level in the Food Standards Code.
The Whole Foodies Sea Vegetables Mixed Seaweed 170g originating from the US with expiry date 30-1-2019 is affected.
It was sold at IGA’s, independent health food stores, online and chemists (Queensland only) in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and West Australia.
FSANZ said food products containing arsenic may cause illness if consumed. Consumers should not eat the product and should return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
A limit of 1mg/kg applies to seaweed and molluscs, for fish and crustacea inorganic arsenic is not allowed above 2mg/kg. There is also an arsenic limit of 1mg/kg for cereals such as rice.
