Chewing gum linked to girl's death
Chewing gum may have been responsible for the death of a 19-year old British girl who was consuming around 14 sticks of gum at the time of her death - but probably not because of its ingredients.
Pathologist Paul Griffiths said there was little evidence to suggest artificial sweeteners were at fault; instead large lumps of chewing gum found in Samantha Jenkins’ stomach may have prevented minerals from being absorbed, he said, as tests showed that Jenkins had low levels of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium.
