Mussel meats linked to illness

Shellfish De La Mer is recalling two batches of frozen cooked mussel meats because it is being linked with illnesses of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning.

The implicated frozen mussel meats were on sale in 500g packs in some Dunnes Stores and Tesco Ireland outlets throughout Ireland.

Batch codes 72774/13286, best before: April 2015; and 72774/13349, best before: June 2015 are affected.

The product originated from Ireland and the Netherlands and was distributed in those two countries as well as Italy.

Prof. Alan Reilly, chief executive of FSAI, said it is important that consumers, who may have bought the implicated product, check their freezers and throw it out.

“Eating contaminated mussels could cause diarrhetic shellfish poisoning. Symptoms are diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain which can start between 30 minutes to a few hours after ingestion.”
