An advert that claimed salted peanuts had the same health benefits as for olive oil has been criticised by the UK advertising watchdog, the BBC reports. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld a complaint about an advert for KP Nuts. The slogan of the magazine advertisement read : "Why stick to the Mediterranean on your Mediterranean diet?". It claimed that "like olive oil, peanuts are high in the unsaturated fats which have been shown to lower cholesterol". A spokesperson for the ASA said the claim that peanuts could reduce cholesterol was not substantiated and that there was not enough evidence from dietary studies to show that the metabolic effects of olive oil and whole peanuts were similar.
