Danish Crown meeting ‘resistance’ in Europe
As Europe’s season changes from summer to autumn, so too does Europe’s appetite for pork change with the weather. Whilst there is no clear trend in the market yet that may indicate the cuts of pork consumers may buy this season, Danish Crown has warned that a glut of hams and shoulder joints could put pressure on the business.
“Right now, the supply of meat appears to be increasing, this means that we are beginning to meet more and more resistance in the market,” said Soren Tinggaard, vice president of Danish Crown’s export department.
Whilst the mood in the European fresh pork market is relatively sanguine after the WTO ruled Russia’s damaging EU pork ban was illegal, Danish Crown is not in the most bullish of moods.
Tingarrded said the growth in pork supplies had “increased pressure” in the market.
Pork processors across the continent are rebuilding their supplies and demand for pork seems to be picking up slightly.
Prices for Europe’s leading pork producers, Germany, the Netherlands and Demand, have all recorded an increase weaner prices in the last three months, according to data from UK levy board AHDB Pork. Spain, earlier in the year seen as a bulwark pork producer during volatility, was the only EU nation to see prices decline.
