Nestlé’s launching its first ever cookie Advent calendar.
The food and beverage giant’s bakery brand Nestlé Toll House is debuting 12 Days of Nestlé Toll House, and drawing inspiration from its baking roots in the process.
The design pays tribute to the Massachusetts inn where Ruth Wakefield created the original Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe, linking the seasonal launch to the brand’s heritage.
The snow-covered house features 12 numbered doors which double as Christmas cards. And behind those doors is a mix of new arrivals and fan favourites, including Snowflake Cookie Dough, Santa’s Cookie Dough, Peppermint Cocoa Cookie Dough and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.
“For generations, Nestlé Toll House has brought people together in the kitchen to bake, share and celebrate,” says Melanie Knoke, senior marketing manager of Nestlé Toll House. “Our first-ever Advent calendar brings that spirit to life.”
Festive snacking
The move reflects the growing demand for food and baking-themed Advent calendars, as brands look beyond traditional chocolate formats to create new experiences for consumers.
And the timing is particularly significant, with Christmas representing one of the most important trading periods for snack and bakery brands, as consumers increase spending on seasonal treats, gifting products and at-home entertaining.
For Nestlé, it offers a way to tap into the countdown-to-Christmas and the popularity of seasonal baking, while driving engagement with consumers during a critical sales period.
Heritage brands lean into nostalgia
The calendar also reflects growing consumer demand for nostalgic food experiences, as brands increasingly draw on their history, founding stories and iconic products to strengthen emotional connections with shoppers.
By referencing the original inn where the Toll House chocolate chip cookie was created, Nestlé’s leveraging a key part of its brand story while introducing a new seasonal format.
For manufacturers, nostalgia-led innovation can help reinforce brand loyalty while appealing to consumers seeking familiar and comforting experiences during the festive season.
Beyond the festive season, the move highlights a wider shift across the food industry towards format innovation.
From limited editions to experiential product concepts, manufacturers are exploring new ways to refresh established brands, secure additional shelf space and create points of difference in highly competitive categories.
