Mars, Inc. is taking confectionery into the future with the launch of the world’s first digital chocolate bar.
Confused? So were we. Here’s what’s actually going on.
The world’s biggest confectionery company has launched an AI-generated Snickers bar under the newly-created Hungr.AI banner, to “help satiate your digital assistant”.
In other words, rather than being a physical product, Hungr.AI is a digital brand activation designed to tap into growing consumer engagement with generative AI tools.
Consumers are encouraged to visit the Snickers website whenever they think their AI’s “acting out of sorts”, producing strange, inaccurate or unexpected responses. Here, they’ll be able to grab a digital Snickers and offer their AI assistant a byte, playing on the brand’s famous strapline, ‘You’re not you when you’re hungry’.
Essentially, Mars has turned AI into this generation’s Tamagotchis.
“Snickers has long been the remedy for out-of-character moments,” says Ashley Gill, brand and content vice president of Mars Snacking. “As generative AI becomes part of everyday life, we’re playfully reinventing the way Snickers connects with our fans in today’s culture.”
Experiential confectionery campaigns
The campaign reflects confectionery’s growing shift towards experiential and digital-first marketing, with brands increasingly using digital experiences to drive engagement, stay culturally relevant and connect with consumers.
What’s more, it’s a form of innovation that doesn’t involve introducing new flavours, formats or limited editions, allowing Mars to tap into a fast-growing cultural trend without the investment and risk required to develop, manufacture and distribute a new product.
Whether consumers actually feel the need to “feed” their AI assistants remains to be seen. But the idea demonstrates how brands can generate buzz and have a bit of fun with fans, without launching a single new product.
