The 2026 shortlist of startups take on industry challenges around scalable food waste reduction, nutrition and food safety

Mounting pressures across the food system are driving demand for solutions that make food production more resilient, affordable, safe and sustainable.

For the food industry, these pressures highlight the need for new solutions to reduce food waste, strengthen food safety and recall strategies and sustainably scale alternative ingredients and production methods that deliver healthier, functional foods.

FoodNavigator’s Global Food Tech Awards EMEA shortlist this year features startups tackling these challenges head-on with innovations that fill in these critical white spaces shaping the future of food.

The top 10 represent some of the region’s most promising innovators. These startups demonstrate exceptional expertise, ingenuity and a commitment to advancing their respective sectors. GFTA judges evaluated applicants based on five criteria: scalability, sustainability, novelty, market fit and star quality.

Top 10 Global Food Tech Awards EMEA shortlist (in alphabetical order)

AuditQ leverages AI and real-world industry expertise for a food-safety compliance platform that streamlines audits, monitors regulatory changes and identifies compliance gaps. The startup says its platform cuts audit preparation time from weeks to days.

Betta Choc Ltd upcycles discarded date seeds into a cocoa alternative via proprietary fermentation technology. The startup offers manufacturers a sustainable ingredient that mimics cocoa’s taste and functionality while minimizing reliance on a volatile supply chain.

EatPol BV combines AI-powered consumer insights with at-home product testing to help food and beverage brands predict market success before launch. The startup leverages proprietary behavioral science developed from Wageningen University and real-world consumer testing across 40 countries. EatPol aims to bridge the gap between traditional sensory evaluation and actual purchase behavior, while reducing the cost and complexity of conventional consumer research.

Enbiosis Biotechnology LTD uses digital twin and AI technology to develop targeted functional food formulations. Its first product, en-TEAR, is a microbiome-based nutraceutical supplement that it says supports dry eye health by addressing pathways along the gut-eye axis.

Friday4:30 Ltd provides a real-time incident management platform that helps food and beverage companies respond to recalls, supply chain disruptions and regulatory issues through automated workflows and compliance documentation.

Hemisphere Technologies’ solvent-free hemp processing technology produces a zero-waste, allergen-free, neutral-tasting plant protein. Its technology uses the hemp seed’s protein, oil and hearts, each of which can be used in different applications. Its flagship product, Hemp Pro 2000, contains 65% plant protein with all nine amino acids for use in bakery, confectionery, sports nutrition and meat alternative applications.

Hüüp Coffee converts lower-grade and surplus coffee beans that would otherwise be tossed out into specialty-grade coffee via fermentation and sustainable processing methods. The startup’s innovation relies on technology instead of farmland to convert an existing global abundance of low-grade coffee beans.

iCook’s take on personalized nutrition leverages AI to create customized meal plans, recipes and grocery lists based on users’ health goals, dietary needs and budgets. The platform aims to make healthier eating more accessible and practical for consumers and organizations.

Proton Europe SL’s advanced freezing technology combines ultra-low temperatures and electromagnetic fields to preserve food quality, helping manufacturers reduce food waste while delivering fresh foods for consumers.

UPP upcycles broccoli stalks and stems into protein, fiber and functional ingredients. The startup says its ingredients create new revenue streams for broccoli grows while helping manufacturers improve the nutritional profile and sustainability of their products.
