Gen Z is changing the confectionery landscape.
The generation of TikTok trends and influencer culture is stepping away from the interests and tastes of the Millennials, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers that went before them, to redefine what it means to indulge.
“Gen Z’s relationship with confectionery is broader than simple indulgence,” says Sally Lyons Wyatt, global EVP at market insights firm Circana. “While older consumers often view confectionery primarily as a treat, younger consumers increasingly use it to support emotional needs, social connection, discovery, and self-expression.”
And the shift is creating big opportunities for the industry.
What is Gen Z?
Generation Z refers to those born between 1997 and 2012, making them 14 to 29 years old in 2026.
Experiential confectionery
“For Gen Z, confectionery is as much about experience and emotional reward as it is about taste,” says Lyons Wyatt.
Products that combine novelty, flavour exploration, unique textures, shareability, and emotional reward resonate strongly with younger consumers.
There’s also, says Lyons Wyatt, a strong interest in globally inspired flavours, premium offerings, shareable formats, and culturally relevant experiences that create excitement and social conversation.
In fact, some of the most successful innovations this year have tapped into lifestyle, entertainment, and cultural moments, including Ferrero’s FIFA World Cup campaign, Nestlé’s KitKat and Formula 1 collaboration, and M&M’s Love Island experience.
However, while these experiences may drive discovery, they’re only one part of the equation when it comes to winning over Generation Z.
Brand loyalty
Gen Z is often characterised as a generation driven by novelty and a reluctance to stay loyal to any one brand, making innovation and cultural relevance critical for confectionery companies seeking long-term growth. But the reality, says Lyons Wyatt, is much more nuanced.
“Loyalty is earned differently than it was for previous generations,” she explains.
Gen Z is more likely to seek out new flavours, limited-edition launches, innovative formats and culturally relevant collaborations, but they’ll then continue to buy those products if they trust the brand to consistently deliver quality and authenticity.
Increasingly, that trust is influenced not only by product performance, but also by what a brand stands for.
Values and sustainability
Beyond flavour and innovation, Gen Z’s paying closer attention to brand values.
Sustainability, ethical sourcing and transparency are becoming increasingly important considerations, particularly among consumers who want their purchasing decisions to reflect their values.
Clear communication around ingredients, sourcing practices, packaging initiatives and environmental commitments can help strengthen brand credibility and deepen relationships with younger consumers.
And for Gen Z, much of that communication is taking place on social media, where brand stories, consumer experiences and viral trends can shape purchasing decisions almost instantly.

Social media
For Gen Z, discovering a new confectionery product is just as likely to happen while scrolling TikTok as it is walking down a supermarket aisle.
“We’ve seen social conversations transform flavours, textures, limited editions, and entirely new products into cultural phenomena,” says Lyons Wyatt. “Trends such as Dubai Chocolate and texture-focused confectionery demonstrate how quickly discovery can scale when social engagement and retail availability align.”
Plus it’s shortening the path from discovery to purchase. A viral video can spark interest, generate buzz and send consumers searching for a product within hours.
The result is a consumer who is not only discovering products differently, but also eating differently.
A new era of snacking
Changing eating habits are also reshaping the confectionery landscape. Rather than adhering to traditional meal structures, many Gen Zers are embracing more flexible eating patterns, with snacking replacing or supplementing conventional meal occasions.
This is creating opportunities for confectionery and snack manufacturers to develop products that fit seamlessly into busy lifestyles – portable formats, portion-controlled products and innovations that blur the lines between confectionery and snacking.
And these changing consumption habits are closely linked to another major trend shaping the category – the desire to balance indulgence with wellness.
Indulgence and wellness
One of the most significant shifts shaping the confectionery category is Gen Z’s approach to health and wellness.
“Gen Z rarely views wellness and indulgence as opposing forces,” says Lyons Wyatt. “Instead, they pursue balance and what we often describe as a ‘healthy enough’ mindset.”
In other words, rather than striving for perfection, they’re focused on making informed choices that fit their lifestyles.
They’re willing to indulge, but they want to feel good about their choices. Whether that means opting for smaller portions, products with cleaner labels, or confectionery that offers added functional or nutritional benefits.
It’s these evolving expectations that are shaping the future of confectionery.
Confectionery’s future
Gen Z’s influence on confectionery extends far beyond flavour preferences.
It’s shaping expectations around wellness, sustainability, innovation, experiences, and brand engagement.
“Gen Z doesn’t just consume products. They consume culture,” says Lyons Wyatt. “The confectionery brands winning with younger consumers are creating emotionally meaningful, culturally relevant, and highly shareable experiences that extend well beyond the candy aisle and fit naturally into consumers’ lives.”
Innovating for Gen Z
- Own emotional reward, not just indulgence.
- Build innovation as a continuous capability through flavours, textures, formats, collaborations, and culture-led experiences. The most successful innovations increasingly create relevance beyond the candy aisle and connect with consumers through lifestyle, entertainment, social, and experiential touchpoints.
- Treat social and cultural relevance as a growth engine, not simply a marketing tactic.
- Deliver permissible indulgence through transparency, portion flexibility, and evolving wellness cues.
