Health and wellness trends have galvanised demand for nutrient-rich foods, supporting sales expansion across key dairy categories. US Greek yogurt major Chobani is taking note

Key takeaways

  • Chobani sees sustained demand for high-protein, nutrient-dense dairy products, supported by health and wellness trends.
  • Coffee is a major growth focus, with La Colombe delivering more than 30% annual growth in RTD coffee.
  • The company is investing $1.2bn in a new Pennsylvania manufacturing hub to support expansion across dairy, coffee and ready-to-enjoy foods.

It’s been around 20 years since Chobani arrived on the US market, securing a spot in the sprawling yogurt aisle. The brand is still widely associated with its Greek yogurt heritage, but investment in other formats and categories has introduced it to a diverse range of shoppers.

Marketing initiatives such as coffee creamer ‘flavour drops’ – limited-edition flavours sold for just one month – have sparked interest among younger generations of coffee drinkers.

Meanwhile, Chobani’s acquisition of Daily Harvest, a company specialising in nutritious ready meals, has opened the door to an entirely new category.

In recent years, Chobani has found another profitable niche: coffee. The company entered liquid creamers and cold coffee, the latter through the acquisition of La Colombe. At the same time, resilient interest in high-protein diets and the increased uptake of GLP-1 weight-loss medications have supported sales in its established categories, particularly yogurt.

Chobani says it is experiencing rapid growth, and that expanding manufacturing capacity and increasing flexibility are key to maintaining this trajectory.

The company recently announced a $1.2bn investment to acquire and expand a 1.5m sqft manufacturing hub in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The plant is strategically located near several major markets and provides operational capacity, access to manufacturing labour and close proximity to hundreds of dairy farms.

Allentown is also geographically close to La Colombe’s plant in Michigan. Together, the two campuses give Chobani a resilient supply, production and distribution network in the midst of a US dairy heartland.

A company spokesperson said: “Both states have hundreds of farms that will supply high-quality milk which is essential for Chobani and La Colombe products. Both Lehigh County and Muskegon County give Chobani and La Colombe access to a deep market of manufacturing talent, infrastructure, and community resources that help advance operations and innovation.”

Protein remains a powerful growth driver

And when it comes to consumer trends shaping what’s next for the company’s portfolio and expansion plans, high-protein dairy and coffee stand out.

“The dairy industry is experiencing strong momentum as consumers increasingly seek foods that deliver both high-quality nutrition and great taste,” the spokesperson said.

“Interest in protein-rich, natural and nutrient-dense products continues to grow, and many consumers are turning back to traditional dairy as a trusted source of high-quality protein. From Greek yogurt to high-protein innovations, Chobani continues to see strong demand for products that help consumers incorporate natural, protein-rich products into their routines in convenient formats.”

Looking ahead, Chobani is focused on advancing innovation around natural, high-protein offerings that fit into modern lifestyles, the spokesperson added.

Coffee presents long-term opportunity

Coffee, a $100bn global category, is also identified as a key growth lever.

“La Colombe’s business continues to grow, seeing 30%-plus annual growth in RTD coffee,” Chobani’s spokesperson said. “The opportunity is particularly strong with younger generations.

“Gen Z and Millennials are among the most engaged coffee consumers, and their preferences increasingly lean toward cold coffee. La Colombe has been ahead of the shift for more than a decade, beginning with Draft Latte on tap in cafés and eventually bringing that signature experience into retail.

“That history gives La Colombe a unique credibility in cold coffee and a strong foundation from which to continue innovating as the category evolves.”

The company is facing stiff competition in the category, however, with the likes of Nestlé and Danone also vying for consumers’ attention. The stakes are so high that they have sparked legal challenges, with Danone suing Chobani over allegedly imitating the appearance of its SToK product.

But given the resilience of demand for protein and coffee, that competition is more likely to be a marathon than a sprint.

“Demand for natural and nutritious food isn’t going away,” the spokesperson said. “We believe the future of food will continue to be shaped by products that deliver nutrition, high-quality ingredients and delicious taste without compromise.

“Looking ahead, we expect consumers will continue to prioritise high-quality protein, nutrient density and, above all, simplicity. They’ll want these benefits to be delivered in convenient formats that can be consumed throughout the day.

“Our innovation pipeline is focused on keeping up with those needs through investments across dairy, coffee and ready-to-enjoy natural foods.”
