Baked goods and seasonal beverages, such as the pumpkin spice latte, serve as the backbone of the pumpkin spice industry, but pumpkin spice-flavored products such as protein beverages and energy bars are keeping the pumpkin spice industry alive outside of the typical fall spice season.

Health-focused consumers are driving the trend in pumpkin spice appearing in organic, lower-sugar and milk-free pumpkin spice products, according to Future Market Insights.

Retailers’ websites are also providing brands easier access to global markets, making it easier to scale pumpkin spice flavors internationally, the report said.

Here are some of the newest pumpkin spice products hitting store shelves this fall.

The power of pumpkin

Better-for-you nutrition bar maker RXBAR released its Pumpkin Spice 12g Protein Bar on Monday alongside its Nut Butter & Oat Apple Pie.

While the Nut Butter & Oat Apple Pie bar is a new variety, RXBAR said its pumpkin-flavored bars are the company’s most popular limited-time flavor.

The flavor, which debuted in 2015, includes a simple list of ingredients: cinnamon, pumpkin, cloves, egg whites, dates and nuts.

“Certain flavors have the power to instantly transport us, bringing back memories of gathering in the kitchen, sharing homemade desserts and embracing everything we love about fall,” said Regina Cabrera, senior brand manager at Mars Snacking, which owns RXBAR. “With new RXBAR Nut Butter & Oat Apple Pie and the return of RXBAR Pumpkin Spice 12g Protein Bar, we set out to capture that sense of warmth and nostalgia in these satisfying snacking options made with simple, recognizable ingredients.”

Pumpkin spice bagels return

This better-for-you brand noted the bagels are made from organic, non-GMO whole grains and are “packed with flavorful brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg, with 10 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber,” the company said.

Pretzels go pumpkin-flavored

Pumpkin spice is back this year with a collaboration between Dunkin’ Donuts and Flipz pretzels.

The Flipz Pumpkin Spice Donut-Flavored Covered Pretzels are available nationwide through October, “bringing a fresh take to one of fall’s most anticipated flavors,” Flipz said on Tuesday.

The combination of sweet and spicy, along with the donut flavor aims to capture a familiar, nostalgic taste, according to Flipz, a subsidiary of pladis Americas.
