Nestlé’s revamping one of its most-recognisable brands, After Eight, for the first time in its 64-year history.

The iconic dark chocolate-covered mint is set to be joined by three new flavours – Caramel, Orange and Raspberry.

“After Eight has long been synonymous with premium mint chocolate, making it one of the most recognisable brands in confectionery,” says Fred Porchet, general manager of Nestlé International Travel Retail. “By introducing flavours beyond mint for the first time, we are broadening the brand’s appeal to new consumers and more consumption occasions.”

The expansion reflects a wider trend among heritage confectionery brands, which are increasingly looking to tap into demand for flavour innovation, while attracting younger shoppers and driving new consumption occasions.

Brand refresh

Alongside the new flavours, the confectionery giant is introducing a brand new packaging design, which it says “embraces the brand’s established aesthetic” and gives a “contemporary update”.

The redesign reflects Nestlé’s efforts to keep the brand relevant to existing fans and a new generation of shoppers, while preserving the premium positioning that has helped distinguish After Eight for decades.

Each flavour has also been given its own distinct colour scheme, making it easier for consumers to identify. Mint remains green, reflecting the brand’s traditional identity, while Caramel is gold, Raspberry is pink, and Orange is of course orange.

Innovation drive

The new launches form part of a broader innovation push across Nestlé’s confectionery portfolio, as the company looks to unlock growth through new formats, flavours and brand extensions.

In recent years, Nestlé has stepped up product development across a number of its best-known brands, introducing limited editions, format innovations and new flavour combinations, to boost engagement and attract new customers.

In the last month alone, it’s launched Aero Milkybar, Milkybar Caramel Crunch, two new KitKat sharing bars, and released a collaboration with Nescafe to create Nescafe Lion Mocha and Nescafe KitKat Latte.

For After Eight, the move beyond Mint represents a notable departure from tradition, reflecting the company’s willingness to evolve heritage brands in line with changing consumer tastes.

But it’s not just about new flavours and packaging designs.

Futureproofing cocoa

The brand refresh is accompanied by a sustainability push, with all After Eight products now using cocoa mass sourced from cocoa-farming families participating in the Nestlé Income Accelerator Program.

The initiative supports cocoa-farming communities to close the income gap and implement regenerative farming methods. It forms part of Nestlé’s broader efforts to build a more resilient cocoa supply chain as the industry faces mounting challenges from climate change, crop disease and growing concerns around farmer livelihoods.
