Mondelēz International has issued an urgent recall of Cadbury Dairy Milk Oreo bars in Canada.

The withdrawal follows the discovery of “undeclared pistachio”, a tree nut allergen that can cause serious or potentially life-threatening reactions in sensitive consumers.

The official notice, published by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), said “there have been reported reactions associated with the consumption of these products”.

As a result, consumers are being advised to dispose of or return the recalled products – Cadbury Dairy Milk Oreo in both 38g and 12 x 38g formats.

The CFIA is now conducting a food safety investigation which, it says, may lead to the recall of further products.

The incident has been classified as a Class 1 recall, the agency’s highest risk category. This is issued when exposure to a product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

Allergen recalls

Allergen-related recalls continue to be one of the most common causes of food product withdrawals globally, presenting a persistent challenge for manufacturers.

The widespread use of nuts and nut-derived ingredients across confectionery portfolios and manufacturing sites makes accurate labelling and allergen management essential.

For chocolate manufacturers, in particular, the frequent handling of almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios and peanuts in shared production environments heightens the importance of strict segregation controls, thorough cleaning procedures and labelling accuracy.

For major brands, recalls can carry significant reputational and financial implications, increasing scrutiny of quality assurance systems and supply chain management practices.

Cadbury Dairy Milk is one of Mondelēz’s flagship chocolate brands, making the recall notable in a market where chocolate remains one of the confectionery sector’s largest and most competitive categories.
