Five-fold increase: ADM opens 'world-first' production hub in Spain

The nutrition solutions specialist has invested more than US$30m into the Valencia-based production facility, which will serve several key global markets and significantly boost the company's capability to produce the sought-after ingredients.

According to ResearchAndMarkets.com, the global probiotics industry – worth an estimated US$59.3bn in 2022 - is projected to reach a valuation of US$91.7bn by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 5.6%. China is set to record a CAGR of 9.2% over the period, with Germany (CAGR of 3.1%), Japan (2%) and Canada (6%) all projected to be important global markets for probiotics. Meanwhile, the US probiotics industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.5% to 2027.

Looking to address this growing demand for probiotics, postbiotics and other health and wellness products, nutrition solutions firm ADM has recently opened a new production facility in Valencia, Spain.

Located close to the firm’s R&D center at the University of Valencia, the site will produce ADM’s BPL1, a weight-management probiotic that can be incorporated in dairy and other foods; the heat-treated BPL1 postbiotic for metabolic wellness, and other proprietary strains. The plant will also be able to support growth in ADM’s Bio-Kult brand of products, as well as supply probiotic and postbiotic ingredients to key markets in the US, Asia-Pacific and Europe.

The firm says the plant, worth more than US$30m, has a capacity to produce 50 metric tons of product per year, which represents a five-fold increase in the company’s production capacity. And given that both probiotics and postbiotics can be produced at the same site – a world-first according to ADM – this could pave the way for the company to fit its US$2bn revenue target from health and wellness products within 10 years. The firm’s wellness portfolio made US$500m in 2022.
