Oat drink brand Oatly has launched a new oat-based ice cream flavour in the UK: Mint Chocolate.

The addition joins Oatly's existing line-up of flavours, including Chocolate Fudge, Strawberry and Salted Caramel.

The new SKU uses 'natural flavours' and 'not a bunch of synthetic flavourings', Oatly said. It is also plant-based and vegan.

"The introduction of our new Mint Chocolate ice cream is another instance of us making it easier for people to take the leap to plant-based. We've put an Oatly spin on a flavour everyone's been asking for - and we think it will go down a treat with ice cream lovers," Oatly UK General Manager Ishen Paran said.

The new product will roll out in Ocado, Sainsbury's and Tesco in the coming months.

'Wholesome' curd snack range launches in Estonia
'Wholesome' curd snack range launches in Estonia

Estonian ice cream producer Premia - part of the Food Union Group - is launching a range of new curd snacks under the iconic Väike Tom brand.

The company said this marks the latest strategic effort to leverage its 'strong position' in the Estonian dairy market to extend its brands beyond ice cream.

The 'wholesome' curd snacks contain no preservatives, artificial colorants, vegetable fats or palm oil, and come packaged in environment-friendly packaging made of 50% of certified bio-based material. The renewable bio-component is a natural waste from the wood processing industry that is a more sustainable alternative to conventional packaging, the company revealed.

Väike Tom (Little Tom in English) has a desire for adventure and a fresh cheerfulness that characterizes the essence of these unique snacks. This little boy, who has been entertaining consumers for more than 20 years, is now helping to spearhead this completely new product category for the Väike Tom brand. The curd snacks are made from natural components, with a minimum number of ingredients and a pleasant, delicate texture," Premia CEO Aivar Aus said.

The cocoa-glazed Väike Tom curd snacks are available in four different flavours: curd with ice cream flavour, curd with banana flavour, vanilla-flavoured curd with pieces of chocolate, and chocolate curd with chocolate chips.

Food Union Group CEO Normunds Stanevics said the company plans to leverage innovation to extend its reach in the Estonian dairy snacking sector.

This is one among many of Food Union Group’s strategic steps to capitalize on the potential of the Estonian dairy market. In Estonia, as in Latvia, the culture of consuming high-quality and fresh dairy products is widespread, and curd snacks are an established category. We have cemented leadership in the curd snack category with Kārums in Latvia; but now, the new Väike Tom products in Estonia arrive bringing together a unique combination of fresh recipes, excellent taste combinations and sustainable packaging. We look forward to building upon these efforts and plan to delight Estonian consumers with more delicious and healthy dairy products,” he said.

The new Väike Tom curd snacks are sold at COOP, Selver, Rimi, Maxima and Prisma stores across Estonia.

Karavela Fish Peas
Karavela Fish Peas

European canned fish company Karavela has developed Fish Peas, a new plant-based brand offering a canned alternative seafood range made from yellow peas. The company said the line was launched in response to growing demand for sustainable diets.

The brand was developed following more than a year of 'in-depth' market research and an investment of around €2.5m, the company said. The development process saw Karavela experiment with more than a hundred different recipes. The line consists of salads, spreads and flakes.

The products carry labels highlighting that they are clean label, gluten free, allergen free and non-GMO. This 'means that products are very healthy', the company suggested.

"Currently, there is a lack of understanding about how plant-based seafood products should taste. We are planning to change that, combining our extensive experience as a canned fish producer with sustainable innovation in the realm of plant-based ingredients. With the launch of our vegan products, we plan to become trendsetters in the plant-based fish product market leading the way for other brands that want to create new vegan products and tastes," said Andris Bite, CEO of Karavela.

Kendamil 'ready to feed' baby milk
Kendamil 'ready to feed' baby milk

Baby milk brand Kendamil is launching what it claims to be a UK first: 'ready to feed' baby milk that is free from fish and palm oil.

The product will be available on the Kendamil website (www.kendamil.com). A batch of 24 costs £23.95 and the product’s shelf-life is 12 months.

"This unique recipe is kinder to babies and the planet," the company claimed.

Kendamil’s ‘Ready to Feed’ formula comprises of natural cow’s milk mixed with essential acids. It is rich in algal oil — a pure marine algae substitute for fish oil. Algal oil boasts essential Omega-3 fatty acids like DHA.

Kendamil said it is also supporting the 'recovery of marine ecosystems and fish populations' by sourcing algal oil instead of fish oil. Moreover, the milk is free from palm oil.

CEO and Founder of Kendamil, Ross McMahon, commented: “Parents associate Kendamil with quality and sustainability, so have long asked us to develop a ‘Ready to Feed’ offering. We’re proud to answer this need with a UK-first — a ‘Ready to Feed’ baby milk that’s uniquely free from fish oil and palm oil, unlike other leading formula brands. Because we won’t compromise our formulations or jeopardise the environment to cut costs.

“We support the nation’s mums and dads at every step of their parenting journey. As parents ourselves, we recognise that a child’s early years are precious so our ‘Ready to Feed’ milk gives you time back to spend nurturing the next generation.”

Net Zero 'single estate' oats from Alara
Net Zero 'single estate' oats from Alara

Organic food maker Alara Organic has extended its Net Zero product line up with its 'single estate' Scottish oats, offering 'porridge with provenance'.

The range is made with oats grown by Oatmeal of Alford on organic farmland in Aberdeenshire and milled on site.

Alara’s founding director, Alex Smith, explained their appeal: “Our organic oats are grown in beautiful and wild Scotland where unspoiled nature, the long summer sun and fertile soils combine to create tasty oats with an exceptional nutritional profile. This is a really unique, gluten-free oat with a great story behind it. They are the very last kiln stabilised oats in the world and they taste amazing.”

Gluten Free Scottish Oats is the latest product to join Alara’s Net Zero Food range. The embedded carbon (CO2e) of every ingredient in each of these products has been calculated by researchers at the University of Westminster and is then offset in soil fertility-boosting and carbon sequestering projects operated  by the charity Rainforest Saver.
