Industry networking group Meat Business Women has been recognised by the United Nations (UN) as a solution to one of its Sustainable Development Goals.

Chair of Meat Business Women Laura Ryan was invited to be the guest speaker at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe session earlier this month.

The international audience of industry experts heard how Meat Business Women has been growing at a pace in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand and is actively helping to showcase the meat sector as a positive career choice for female talent whilst also creating networking opportunities for those already working in the sector.

Ryan’s presentation focused on the business benefits of having a gender balanced company board and organic pipeline of talent. “Our industry is under siege at the moment and we need to be proactive in demonstrating we are a positive career destination and one which nurtures talent. What Meat Business Women has created is a positive global network which benefits our sector and, most importantly, is good news for the industry at an international level.”

The UN Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by 2030. They aim to address global challenges, including those related to poverty, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity and gender equality.

Ryan said that as a result of the conference, there is significant interest to launch Meat Business Women in further territories across the world in addition to working with the United Nations on future meat industry projects.

She added: “To be recognised by the United Nations is hugely important for our community across the globe, we have a packed calendar of events and, as ever, would be delighted to explore development into further countries.”
