Orkla scoops up British toffee and fudge maker Confection by Design

Through its subsidiary Orchard Valley Foods, the Nordic manufacturer and distributor already purveys two-thirds of the UK confectioner’s products.

NIC Enterprises Limited, another wholly-owned subsidiary of Orkla, will sign the agreement with Confection by Design.

According to a release, Orkla Food Ingredients ‘holds a strong position’ in supplying bakery and ice cream ingredients in the Nordic region and select European countries. Three of its UK-focused subsidiaries – Orchard Valley, County Confectionery, and NIC UK – have assisted growth in Britain.

“The purchase of Confection by Design is strategically right and will complement Orkla Food Ingredients’ position as a supplier of inclusions and accessories to the bakery, chocolate and ice cream market,”​ said Tor Osmundsen, CEO of NIC.

Confection by Design is a privately-owned company that provides inclusions (fudge, toffee and honeycombs) to the baking and confectionery industries. Founded in 1988, it currently employs 35 people from its office and production facility in Harrogate, about 15 miles (24km) miles north of Leeds.

Its clients include Nestlé, Kerry Foods and CSM Bakery Solutions, as well as premium chocolate brands Green & Black's and Hotel Chocolat.

The 30-year-old inclusion maker ended its 2019 fiscal year on June 30, reaching $7.1m (£5.7m) in sales, and was officially acquired on July 1.

The purchase price was not disclosed.

Orkla employs more than 3,200 people in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Latvia and Estonia. The company reported $7.17bn (€6.4bn) in sales last year, selling brands such as Panda licorice, KiMs chips, and Laima marzipan.
