Netherlands-based business Vivera is set to boost production “faster than planned” of its 100% plant-based steak following its first 40,000 products selling out in Tesco stores across the UK.

Following its launch into 400 Tesco stores from 21 May, Vivera revealed that some supermarkets were sold out of the plant-based steak within a day and that it would do its utmost to meet market demand.

Vivera rolled out its 100% plant-based steak into Tesco stores to tap into the expanding vegan and vegetarian community. The steak is produced at its 7,500m2 meat-free production facility in the Netherlands, using ingredients such as wheat and soy.

Vivera commercial manager (partner) Gert Jan Gombert said the business was overwhelmed by the success of the 100% plant-based steak and that social media also contributed significantly towards its success.

The consumers in England are almost without exception very enthusiastic about the taste and texture of the steak,” said Jan Gombert. “The hashtag #Vivera almost exploded on Instagram. This ground-breaking product has also received a particularly positive reception from professional critics.”

The 100% plant-based steak is set to be presented officially at the PLMA fair in Amsterdam and will be rolled out into the majority of Dutch retailers, such as Albert Heijn and JUMBO Supermarkten, from 11 June.

The steak will also be available in Belgium at retailers such as Carrefour on the same date.

Vivera has estimated that it will produce up several million pieces of the 100% plant-based steak a year and claimed to be the first company to produce the product worldwide.
