JBS has revealed that its business unit Novaprom will export its first 10 tonnes (t) of collagen fibre and collagen powder from bovine skin into South Africa.

Novaprom said the addition of South Africa would help strengthen its presence in international markets and it expected to export 250t of collagen per year from 2020.

The product line of collagen will be marketed as ‘Novapro’, which will be used for mainly meat and for a wide range of other applications, such as injected products.

The South African market is a great opportunity to further expand our business as the country has a strategic location and today represents one of the most important economies in the African continent,” said Novaprom director Walter Lene.

Founded in 2002, Novaprom is the leading producer of bovine collagen and exports to customers in more than 20 countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, Latin America and Australasia.

It has an annual production capacity of 5,000t of collagen and 4,000t of functional ingredients for industrialised products.

JBS recently claimed that Novaprom became the first Brazilian firm to export a bovine ingredient to the US market.
