Shimadzu and Phytronix have signed an agreement to offer the industry’s first Triple Ion Source.

The Triple Ion Source incorporates the Phytronix LDTD (Laser Diode Thermal Desorption Ion Source), and is designed for use only with the Shimadzu LCMS-8060 triple quadrupole mass spectrometer.

It is for screening and confirmation work and the firms said it will improve productivity in high-throughput laboratories doing drug discovery and food safety applications.

The Triple Ion Source is for LDTD-MS/MS, ESI-MS/MS and APCI-MS/MS.

Switch without disconnecting any component of mass spectrometer

Jean Lacoursière, of Phytronix, said with a click the scientist can select the way to develop, produce, screen and confirm their analysis.

“With a Triple Ion Source, the customer can switch between LC and LDTD just by a click without touching any parts. This feature offers a power tool for screening at four seconds per sample by LDTD and confirms positives with the same aliquot and sample prep by LC.

“At this speed, the Tandem LDTD-MS 8060 is the fastest technology in mass spectrometry for food safety. It will allow more samples to be run for increased productivity.

“Shimadzu customers utilizing the LCMS-8060 have asked about incorporating LDTD technology on their systems.”

The LCMS-8060 combines a heated ESI source with all UF technologies including UFsweeper III, a collision cell filled with argon gas. UFsweeper III achieves dwell times of 0.8 ms per MRM.

The system has a data acquisition scan speed of 30,000 u/sec and a polarity switching time of 5 msec.

It is the first time the companies have worked together and they presented information about the design at ASMS in Indianapolis.

Shuzo Maruyama, general manager, Analytical & Measuring Instruments Division at Shimadzu Corporation, said researchers had asked for LDTD technology to be integrated into its platform to achieve sample analysis in less than four seconds.

“The Ultra High Throughput LDTD ion source highlights the speed of Shimadzu’s LCMS-8060. With the world’s fastest detection speed, the LCMS-8060 gives scientists the ability to work with a two-second sample-to-sample runtime without compromise.”

Meanwhile, Shimadzu has released a top-of-the-line gas chromatograph (GC).

Gas chromatographs are used for R&D and quality control in applications such as food safety.

The Nexis GC-2030 can be equipped with different high-sensitivity detectors, such as the barrier discharge ionization detector (BID) or a flame ionization detector (FID).

All detectors have a sampling frequency of up to 500 Hz in combination with a selectable filter time constant down to 2ms.

Advanced Flow Technology (AFT) enables backflushing, switching between detectors, detector splitting, and heart-cutting which improve productivity by reducing lab space requirements and increasing analysis speed.
