Fore! Golf ball pieces prompt McCain Foods recall

McCain Foods USA has recalled hash browns that may be contaminated with golf ball materials.

The firm said the materials may have been inadvertently harvested with potatoes used to make the frozen product.

There have been no reported injuries but consumption may pose a choking hazard or physical injury to the mouth.

Roundy's Brand, 2 lb. bag of Frozen Southern Style Hash Browns (UPC 001115055019) and Harris Teeter 2 lb. bag of Frozen Southern Style Hash Browns (UPC 007203649020) are impacted.

Roundy's products were distributed at Marianos, Metro Market, and Pick 'n Save supermarkets in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Harris Teeter items went to North Carolina, South Carolina, Virgina, District of Columbia, Delware, Florida, Georgia and Maryland. Distribution was after January 19.

Production code date B170119 can be found on the back of the packaging. Any product with a different date is not affected.

McCain is working with the Food and Drug Administration and supermarkets to ensure affected products are removed from the market.

McCain Foods (US) is the American division of McCain Foods Limited, employing over 20,000 people and operating 47 facilities on six continents. In the US, it has eight production sites and 4,000 employees.

In a separate incident, Morrisons is recalling its own brand of Trimmed Beans because they may contain metal.

The UK supermarket said 170g trimmed beans with date codes 22, 23 and 24 April were affected.

Beans came from Egypt and were sent to Gibraltar and the UK, according to the RASFF portal.

UK media reported two customers found metal resembling needles in the product.
