English Premier League club Everton has renewed its partnership with The Protein Works (TPW) - adding personalised nutritional bars to the existing deal.

UK sports nutrition brand TPW will continue to supply the football club with specially-formulated protein shakes which have been adapted to fit each individual player’s needs, for the 2017/18 season.

A major development in the partnership is the inclusion of nutritionally formulated energy bars.

Ingredient of the Year – Personalised Nutrition Initiative of the Year

Nutrigenomics, I-nutrition, personalised nutrition – the concept is not new but its time may have arrived as its promise diverges with other technologies. Is there an ‘I’ in your team’s approach to nutrition?

The bars will be produced in the 20,000 square foot bakery which was constructed by TPW in 2014 and will use the same unique protein combination as the company's protein flapjacks, pancakes and truffles.

By using fitness tests, recovery rates and injury rehabilitation, player performance is measured to ensure each player’s needs are addressed.

Co-founder and head of development, Nick Smith, said “Nutrition plays a pivotal role in a player’s condition and if any dietary deficiencies show up in these tests we look to remedy that immediately with the team”.

The bars also come with bespoke, in-depth labelling, said TPW's head of innovation, Gareth Lane.

“We’re not satisfied with solely providing a product; we’re also committed to helping the dietary development of the teams we support. This is why we’ve put so much detail on every label. This is so it’s not just a bar; it’s a lesson in sports nutrition for anyone who reads it”.

Shakes for every sportsman

The personalised nutrition program has shakes for post-match, post-training, injury-care, and recovery-growth, and all shakes were taste-tested by the team.

Although each player’s needs are different, the two blends they all take are the post-training and post-games shakes, with the team favouring the all-natural chocolate flavour.

Smith says more fruit-based flavours, like strawberries and cream, could be adopted for the summer months.

The blends are not only to be used on a professional level, amateur sportsmen can benefit from them also, he added.

“The work we do with elite athletes and teams flows through to other products we develop for general sale . We use the same key principles throughout. Science, quality and innovation and a lot of Everton fans love that we use the same award-winning whey protein in all our products that fuels their heroes at Finch Farm” he said.

As well as supporting the first team, TPW is also providing for Everton’s youth team, as part of their scheme to “nutritionally nurture the next generation of Everton’s Elite.”
