DuPont’s Bax System X5 has won AFNOR certification meaning European companies and food safety officials  may be able to easily adopt the system to test for salmonella and E.coli.

The AFNOR certification is a European validation body that examines alternative pathogenic detection methods for the food safety industry. DuPont already has approval for a wide range of its products and the certification has been extended to include its latest product– the Bax System X5 PCR.

What is the BAX System X5?

DuPont’s X5 system is an automated system that uses a molecular biology technology called a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) – something that magnifies a few pieces of DNA – to detect dangerous pathogens like salmonella and E.coli. The X5 is smaller, lightweight version of its DuPont Bax predecessors and is designed to provide more testing flexibility for food companies, service laboratories and government agencies.

This extension of the AFNOR validation applies to the detection of salmonella in all human and animal food products, as well as testing for the E.coli serotype O157:H7 in raw meats, milk and vegetables.

Food safety first

AFNOR Certification is particularly important to the European food industry, where validation according to ISO (The International Organization for Standardization) standards is a requirement before an alternative method can be adopted by food companies or contract testing laboratories,” said Hugo Gonzalez, EMEA sales leader for diagnostics at DuPont Nutrition & Health.

Validation of the Bax System X5 by AFNOR Certification allows customers to use these assays to quickly and reliably detect salmonella and E.coli O157:H7 in their products with certainty.”

DuPont Nutrition & Health is the arm of the American science and engineering conglomerate that addresses food safety issues through the development of bio-based ingredients and molecular diagnostic solutions to detect pathogens.
