Portugal’s health and food safety authority (ASAE) has confiscated 7.5 tonnes of food as part of an investigation into Salmonella.

ASAE said following the illnesses at the Street Food event in Portimão, which local media reported ranged between 70-100 people, it investigated to determine the origin and operating conditions of the suppliers of the foodstuffs through its regional South unit.

Mostly kebab products were seized from two wholesalers in Montijo and Loulé and activity at the Montijo site was suspended due to lack of hygiene.

ASAE said criminal proceedings have been created and assets worth €27,000 seized.

The agency added it will continue its investigation to safeguard the health and safety of consumers especially during this time of year when festivals are popular.

The Street Food festival was held from 23 July -2 August.
