Cattle farmers in the Mkushi and Kabwe districts of Zambia have voiced their objections to imports of beef to the country.

The views were collated as part of a study, commissioned by Zambia National Farmers’ Union, into beef production and marketing.

The farmers in question said the local beef industry should be protected and that the country had sufficient supplies to satisfy local demand.

Zambian beef farmers have since called on their government to focus on developing the infrastructure of the domestic industry, improve animal husbandry and veterinary services, and to develop a beef auction sale system in order to enhance growth of the beef sub-sector.
