Tate & Lyle PLC has agreed to acquire Chinese polydextrose specialty fibre company Winway Biotechnology Nantong Co. Ltd to give it a base for selling the ingredient in the Asia Pacific region.

Winway is based in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, and produces polydextrose for Chinese and global customers. Tate & Lyle said it intended to expand the facility over the next two years and add to its speciality fibre range. Currently, Tate & Lyle has two polydextrose facilities, in the US and the Netherlands.

The company did not disclose financial terms of the deal, which is subject to government approval, expected later this year.

President of Speciality Food Ingredients for Tate & Lyle Olivier Rigaud said in a statement: “The acquisition of Winway provides us with an excellent platform from which to accelerate the growth of our specialty fibres business in Asia Pacific, and to expand our Health and Wellness offering globally.”

Polydextrose is a soluble dietary fibre and is often used in reduced sugar applications to provide bulk, texture and mouthfeel.
