Probiota 2014 – relocated from Brussels to Amsterdam and organised by NutraIngredients – will bring together the finest scientific and commercial minds operating in the pre- and probiotic sector in a 2-day, 2-stream event.

Chaired by outspoken Scottish researcher Dr Gregor Reid – a Canadian resident who has devoted his life to probiotic research and worked with some of the biggest players including Danone – the event unites Probiotech and Microbiota to explore crucial lab to shelf issues with a truly global remit.

Science

Peer into the latest research on the gut microbiome, skin and brain health, allergies, obesity and more from leading academics in their fields including professors Jeroen Raes at Leuven University; Patrice D Cani from the Université Catholique de Louvain and Dr Karen Scott from the University of Aberdeen.

Business

See broad picture presentations to feed market strategies in both pre- and probiotics from the likes of Ewa Hudson at Euromonitor International, co-chair Peter Wennstrom from the Healthy Marketing Team and Beijing-based Jeff Crowther at the US-China Health Products Association.

Nestlé’s Kimmo Makinen will look at the use of probiotics in infant nutrition while AnaBio Technologies founder Sinéad Doherty will reveal a cost-saving encapsulation technology that is winning the interest of the world’s biggest probiotic players.

Peter Wennstrom will chair the Probiotech stream and present ideas about how to innovate in the pre- and probiotic space

L'Oreal’s Audrey Guéniche will get to the rub of the gut-skin microbiota while Maikel Hendriks, president of Medical Brands, will show how the EU’s medical devices route allowed his company’s products on-market with claims, when denied by the EU’s tough health claim laws.

Regulations

Such regulatory challenges will be addressed by the likes of the Global Alliance for Probiotics (GAP) which has been making quiet progress toward the EU’s first approved probiotic health claim.

Luca Bucchini PhD will make a rare public appearance to share key insights from the ‘rogue’ Italian market.

There will also be round-table discussions tackling global issues, input from prebiotic cereal makers, supplement and pharma players, retailers and regulators not to mention a science poster competition for the first time.

Networking opportunities are built in to the programme from the first morning and are capped by a fine dinner event at one of Amsterdam’s best restaurants.
