Food safety officials have confirmed that horse DNA has been found in beef products on sale in the UK for the first time since July.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said that cans of ‘Food Hall Sliced Beef in Rich Gravy’, manufactured in Romania in January 2013, had tested positive for horse DNA at levels between 1% and 5%.

“Horsemeat is not identified in the ingredients list and therefore it should not have been present in the product,” said the FSA statement.

The Agency added that the 320g cans, with a best-before date of January 2016 and a batch code of 13.04.C, had been distributed to retailers Home Bargains (TJ Morris Ltd) and Quality Save stores in the UK.

The product tested negative for the veterinary drug phenylbutazone, which has been linked to ill health in humans, but the FSA urged consumers who had bought the product to return it to the retailers.
