Bernard Matthews has joined SISTEM, used by Kellogg's and Maple Leaf, which is a food and workplace training program by Alchemy for the food manufacturing industry.

Food manufacturers, processors, packagers, distributors and retailers use Alchemy to increase productivity, reduce safety incidents, and lower compliance risk.

It is new to the UK food sector but has trained over two million workers from food processing companies in North America on food safety best practice.

The company is now working with Bernard Matthews to further develop a training program in languages relevant to people in food processing.

Migrant workers

For example the UK food manufacturing industry relies on a large number of migrant workers, especially Eastern European and in particular Polish.

Bryan Hurst, training manager, Bernard Matthews, said it hired SISTEM to cut the ‘administrative burden’ it had with its previous group learning provider.

In a multi-site operation like ours where staff can be remotely located or just one farmer for example needs to be trained, getting people to spend time training in one place can be both impractical and costly.”

Paula Morris, commercial director, Alchemy Systems, agreed and said one of the main issues Bernard Matthews had with its previous group learning system was that it was administratively heavy.

Zero admin

Alchemy SISTEM in contrast has zero admin. It gives people in a number of locations access to training without the cost of having to spend a day away on a training course.”

The e-learning program works via remote access training and is monitored centrally using hand-held remotes, interactive courses, and one PC. All footage is filmed in food manufacturing environments and the courses are written to local food legislation.

It can train individuals or groups up to 150 and afterwards, users receive an accredited and certificated level 2 food safety qualification by FDQ (Food and Drink Qualifications).

User friendly

We needed a training program that was user friendly and would ease some of the administration that was part of our previous systems and procedures,” said Hurst .

We want to complement the procedures we have in place already but make things simpler for those delivering the training and for those taking part.”

Bernard Matthews will be using SISTEM to deliver train groups of people working in production and individual farm managers and workers at any of the company’s 52 owned farms across Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire.

The program applicants watch a video around certain situations, then they are taught a number of learning points and asked multiple choice questions based on what they have learned.
