Mettler Toledo Safeline is helping food and drink manufacturers clamp down on glass contamination with the introduction of an x-ray machine specifically designed to root it out in glass jars.

The InspireX R50G is specifically designed to do so at high throughput speeds. The firm said it was ideal for inspecting small to large diameter glass jars containing a broad range of food and pharmaceutical products.

Traditionally, glass jars have presented a challenge for x-ray inspection systems, as the thicker glass in the base absorbs more x-rays than the thinner wall, masking foreign bodies.

The InspireX R50G, however, features an angled single x-ray beam to inspect blind spots at the base, as well as in the body, maximising the likelihood of detection, said Mettler Toledo Safeline.

Comprehensive inspection

The body, neck and cap are all fully imaged on the x-ray detector; enabling comprehensive inspection of the container and jar fill level, the company claims.

It has designed the machine to accurately inspect up to 1,200 containers per minute, optimising production line efficiency for food and pharmaceutical manufacturers.

The high-speed automated reject device ensures only contaminated products are removed without the need to slow production. The equipment’s data logging and x-ray image library include automatic time stamps for rejected products, enabling manufacturers to demonstrate due diligence and guarantee that products conform to food safety standards.
