CAPIVA resin cuts need for additional elastomers and rosins, says Wacker
German chemical group Wacker has developed a solid resin for gum bases that it claims halves processing times and eliminates the need for additional flavorings.

he company claims its CAPIVA resin allows fewer ingredients in chewing gum and bubble gum formulations and lets manufacturers cutout processing steps.

Florian Degenhart, corporate communications at Wacker, told ConfectioneryNews.com: “It improves the quality of the chewing gum (improved elasticity, reduced stickyness, better flavor release, longer shelf life) and it facilitates the manufacturing process by reducing the processing time of the individual processing steps, thus making the whole process more efficient and less time consuming.”

Longer shelf-life; less sticky

Wacker said that the resin is added to the gum base, the water-insoluble part of the gum, and can achieve the required elasticity without the help of additional elastomers and rosins.

“We generally expect that the processing time can be reduced by at least 50 percent with CAPIVA, but of course this very much depends on the individual manufacturing process,” added Degenhart.

The resin has approval in Europe and China and works with all commonly used sugar alternatives, said Wacker.

Degenhart added that CAPIVA was highly resistant to oxidation, which could improve shelf-life.

Wacker said that gums with the resin were easier to remove from surfaces than conventional gum bases and produced no bitter flavors.

The company is seeking regulatory approval for the resin in the US and South America and has filed patents on the manufacturing process.
