The life cycle approach to eliminate food waste is to become a growing issue and might result in more packaging to gain a better overall footprint, according to DuPont.

Speaking to FoodProductionDaily.com at trade show Pack Expo 2012 in Chicago, Shanna Moore, DuPont Global Sustainability Director said the purpose of the awards was to share industry knowledge and help the sector learn together.

Help with the food security problem, extending shelf life, sustainability and preventing food waste were going to be the key themes of the future.

She said they were entries from more than 200 countries.

Moore said the Diamond winner was Curwood, a division of Bemis, for its vacuum package for red meat that maintains the meat’s colour through a found-in-nature proprietary additive in the contact layer of the barrier package.
