Food manufacturers can slash their electricity bills thanks to the launch of an energy-saving x-ray machine from Mettler-Toledo Safeline X-ray.

Lars Renhead, regional sales manager at the company, tells FoodProductionDaily.com in this exclusive podcast that the new X3310 requires 20% less power than a traditional x-ray generator.

The machine uses a 20 watt x-ray generator rather than the 100 watt generator used by more conventional systems.

This also results in a reduction of x-ray emissions, meaning thinner stainless steel is used for the x-ray cabinet, making the design more eco-friendly.

Speaking at the trade show FachPack 2012 in Nuremberg, Germany, Renhead says the machine also gives food and pharma processors a fivefold increase in foreign body detection sensitivity over previous equipment.

Mettler-Toledo says the system is ideally suited to the detection of small and medium-sized packaged products. It uses a single vertical x-ray beam and is available in 300m or 400m detector widths to suit a range of applications.
