Romer Labs has taken a leap forward in its pathogen detection services by purchasing US biotech firm Strategic Diagnostics’ (SDIX’s) food safety and genetically modified organism (GMO) businesses for $13.5m, it claims.

The SDIX food safety business includes several tests for Salmonella, Listeria and E.Coli.

These include RapidChek lateral flow test strips with proprietary enrichment media, the patented RapidChek SELECT phage-based enrichment systems and RapidChek CONFIRM immunomagnetic confirmation tools.

Strong brands

“The RapidChek product family is a strong brand for food pathogen detection and has proven to be an accurate and reliable rapid test for the food industry worldwide,” said Michael Prinster, chief executive of Romer Labs North America.

“We are proud to integrate this renowned brand into our portfolio and are fully committed to expanding our range for food pathogen analysis in the future.

The acquisition includes the genetically modified organisms (GMO) test kit business, for which SDIX already had an exclusive distribution partnership with Romer Labs.

Romer Labs has taken over all staff of the SDIX food safety and GMO division, including those in research and development, sales and marketing and production. It will continue to run the business out of Newark, Delaware.

SDIX

SDIX is a biotechnology company with a core expertise in creating better antigens, better antibodies and better assays for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and food safety markets.

In the wake of the disposal, SDIX said it would focus on its life science division and Advanced Genomic Antibody Technology.

“We are pleased to not only achieve great value for SDIX shareholders, but also place our food safety and GMO assets in good hands with Romer Labs,” said SDIX president and chief executive Francis DiNuzzo.

Romer Labs develops and markets test kits for food allergens, mycotoxins, veterinary drug residues and other food contaminants.
