The SecurityPeel film is based on multi-layer cast co-extrusion technology and has been tested on the firm’s own pilot line.
The Finland-based company said the transparent film offers anti-fog properties, increased product safety, longer shelf life and a peelable seal.
Product testing
Håkan Forss, marketing director at KWH Plast, said the key to product development is the pilot line for test production of multi-layer films.
“The objective for developing the new lidding film was to achieve superior performance which adds value throughout the value chain: packaging converters, food industry, brand owners, retailers and consumers.
“The challenge was to bring all desired functionalities together, as most lidding solutions today are either convenient or secure, but not both,” he said.
“With our multi-layer solution, the excellent peeling of the lidding film has now been combined with other special features like state of the art barrier and anti-fog properties.”
Barrier and anti-fog properties
The barrier layer reduces the oxygen transmission rate and protects the product and the anti-fog additive of the lidding film changes the surface properties so that moisture inside the package does not form droplets but spreads out on the surface of the film, added KWH Plast.
The film properties are verified in a laboratory in order to find and quantify the optimal mechanical, optical and sealing properties required before final tests on production lines at the packaging converter.
Forss added: “This film was developed together with several partners: converters, machine producers and companies from the food industry.
“This enabled us to optimise our solution. Our film protects the product inside the package without compromising safety and ensures a smooth and convenient opening.”
