An eco-friendly anti-fog coating for food packaging with high oil and grease resistance is the first water-based product that is repulpable and biodegradable, said Aqua Based Technologies (ABT).

The US company said its AquaCote Anti-Fog 7000 was developed as a “safe alternative” to solvent coatings. The water-based product has overcome demanding laboratory tests to establish its anti-fog credentials while containing zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or ozone depleting ingredients, added ABT.

AquaCote 7000 has been designed for any food packaging that requires anti-fog properties and can used onboth hot and cold applications - including food wrappers, covers, trays and containers for frozen food packaging. It can also be applied to ice cream boxes and packaging related to fresh foods, dairy, meats and cheeses, said the company. It also has heat seal properties.

Top coated

“The product is the only one of its kind that can be coated onto finished packaging and not involve the extrusion process,” Thomas Kistler, vice president sales and marketing told FoodProductionDaily.com.

He said this is significant as anti-fog properties are usually added to a material when it is extruded – which adds cost and may affect the stability of the product. Instead, the AquaCote 7000 is top coated after the manufacturing of the substrate.

“Our coating can be applied to anything making it much more cost effective and easy to use,” he said. “The coating is applied directly to the substrate on the machine - either flexo, gravure or sprayed.”

All the product’s ingredients have food contact approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said the company which is a division of ADM Tronics, Inc.

The product is being launched globally. While the company does not have a European distributor orders can be shipped worldwide from the port of New York/New Jersey.
