How soy foods can help in Haiti

Soy products can be stored and transported at ambient temperatures, and are packed with protein. Ideal, then, for the Haiti earthquake relief effort, explains Gerard Klein Essink of Bridge2Food.

SoyFoods Haiti Alliance Relief Effort, or SHARE SHARE has been formed by a number of soy-related organisations, including the US-based World Soy Foundation, Canadian non-profit Malnutrition Matters, and European consultancy Bridge2Food.

It is now looking for more donations from industry. Donations have already been made by Solae, Whitewave Foods, Alpro and Vitasoy. Distribution has already started via US NGO Feed the Children.

In the longer term, donations could also include soybeans, soy protein ingredients and micro-nutrient supplements for value-added processing in Haiti.

More information on the programme and how to make a donation can be found at http://bridge2food.com/haiti.asp
