Baby food recalled after packaging defects triggers safety alert

Nurture Inc baby food company has issued a partial recall after fears a packaging defect could cause the product to become contaminated with bacteria.

The US firm said it had issued the voluntary recall on some of its Happytot and HappyBaby pouch meals with expiry dates between November 2010 and January 2011.

“These products are being recalled due to a packaging defect that potentially could cause the pouches to swell or leak," said a company statement. “Swollen or leaking pouches could indicate that the products may contain bacteria that could potentially cause illness.”

Nurture Inc said no illnesses had been reported and the products had been sold at less than 300 retail locations nationwide. Lab tests carried out on products with the packaging defect had detected no harmful bacteria, it added.
