French considering BPA review
AFSSA, France’s food safety body, told FoodProductionDaily.com the preliminary review is due to be completed by the end of next month. The body currently believes BPA in food packaging poses no threat to human health.
“The report will be finished by the end of January 2010,” an agency spokeswoman said. “The objective is to review some most recent and relevant studies on BPA toxicology and to conclude on the level of confidence on the current health based guidance value.”
AFFSA said the move is part of its general risk assessment process to monitor developments to see if new data has surfaced that might cause it to look again at its position. Its most recent studies 12 months ago concluded there was no risk from microwaving polycarbonate baby bottles nor relating to the elimination of BPA in human urine.
