Children’s Food Campaign leads to discontinued bics

Three biscuit products made by Cow & Gate are to be discontinued next month, after a survey of products for young children found they contain trans fats.

The company has said it is discontinuing its Bear, Berry Bear and Animal Friends biscuits following discussions with the Food Standards Agency, after having become aware of the presence of hydrogenated fat – which contains trans fats.

The issue came to light as part of a survey by the Children’s Food Campaign (CFC), part of the food and farming Sustain group. CFC said the products were improperly labelled and the presence of trans fats – which have been linked to heart disease – was not clear.

The campaign found a slate of other products for babies and toddlers that also had high levels of saturated fat, sugar and salt.

These include Farley's Original Rusks, 100g of which were seen to contain 29g of sugar. Heinz Toddler's Own Mini Cheese Biscuits were found to have 7.3g of saturated fat per 100g.
