A new portable computer designed to operate in challenging food industry conditions is to be launched by noax Technologies at the PackExpo/Process Expo event in Chicago later this month.

The S15 Premium Line is a sealed 15inch stand-alone PC which can operate to the most stringent hygiene requirements in the food processing industry and in both hot and cold environments, according to the company.

"The S15 with its smooth surface without edges that can collect dirt is specifically designed to work in harsh, wash down environments where easy cleaning and disinfection are important," the company's sales manager Jonathan Staub told FoodProductionDaily.com.

He said that the computer has a V2A (304) stainless steel enclosure plus a hygienic plastic front with no gaps or joints between the enclosure and touch display.

Typical applications, according to Staub, include controlling cutting machines in slaughter houses and tracking food components in production lines and directing food packaging machines.

Extreme control

"It has been designed to operate in wet or steamy environments and to cope with vibration and extreme heat or cold," said Staub.

The PC can operate from 0°C to 45°C and, when fitted with optional extra heating equipment, in temperatures as low as minus 25°C, he added.

Integration

Staub said the computer is designed for simple integration in the production environment, is compatible with all comparable standard bracket systems, and can also be mounted on a wall or to various carriers by means of a stainless steel bracket.

Due to the PC's enclosed construction without ventilation slots or external fans, it is splash proof and qualifies for safety class IP65 (NEMA 4x) standards, claims the manufacturer.

The computer panel features a high contrast, durable 15 inch (38.1cm) industrial TFT display screen with a resolution of 1280x1024 SXGA ensuring legibility under even the worst conditions, said the company.

It claims that the integrated, analogue touch panel with hardened plastic surface ensures simple operation.

The S15 Premium Line features 20 integrated programmable keys in combination with LEDS for on/off brightness and contrast settings or for operating status, and is supplied with the noax N8 motherboard, an Intel-Pentium M1.4 GHz processor and a 60 GB hard drive, added the manufacturer.
