Alimpex, the Czech dairy group, has acquired compatriot Mlekarna
Klatovy for an undisclosed sum.

Local press reports claim that Alimpex planned to maintain production of hard and soft cheese at Mlekarna Klatovy, which posts sales of around CK800 million a year.

Like many other food producers in accession countries, Mlekarna Klatovy is in the process of restructuring its business in order to face up to the competitive challenge from rival producers once the Czech Republic joins the EU on 1 May.

The company has decided to reduce the number of employees by around 20 per cent - meaning that 50 or so workers will lose their jobs by the end of March.

Alimpex also owns majority stakes in a number of other Czech dairies, including Pragolaktos, Stribro, Louny and Jaromer. Total group sales reached CK4 billion in 2003.
