Following a year of investments in its production facility, leading
Hungarian pasta producer Soos Tesztagyarto, based in Vecses, near
Budapest, has said that it is now gearing up to increase its yearly
production to meet demand from both national and western European
retailers.

According to a report from Villaggazadag, the company said that investments made this year have totalled some €760,000 and had improved capacity at the company's production facility to enable it to make the jump. The company says it is also planning to make investments in its production facility in the coming year of up to €270,000.

The company started its operation eight years ago as a small-sized family business and is now expecting production output of around 2,500 tonnes for the year 2003.

CEO Zoltan Soos said: "Soos Tesztagyarto sells some 98 per cent of its annual production to local supermarket chains, but some western European companies have already shown interest in Soos products."

The company's factory, which employs 25 workers at present and is equipped with Italian machinery, was constructed at a price of €3. million. In the past three years, Soos has increased its annual production by 25 per cent a year and its annual revenue by 30 per cent a year.

In 2002 yearly pasta consumption in Hungary was estimated at 6.5kgs per capita, which means that together with the Czech Republic, it is the leading pasta consuming nation in the CEE region. On a global basis this figure also puts it ahead of countries such as the UK, Canada, Spain and Germany.
