Volactive, the functional foods arm of milk replacer company Volvac International, will use the FiE exhibition to promote its latest heat stable whey protein isolate.

Developed by the Cambridge-based company for use in ready to drink (RTDs) protein beverages that need a long shelf life, Volactive claims its real value is in clear RTDs such as fruit juices or ice tea.

"Furthermore such products enriched with Ultra Whey HS can be subjected to pasteurisation or UHT treatments without ill effect - normally such heat treatment will cause denaturation of the protein," said the company in a statement this week.

Earlier this year, announcing DV Nutrition, a joint venture with DOC Kaas, the company told of plans to build a new whey processing plant in Holland.

Loaded with essential amino acids, whey protein ranks as one of the best sources of protein for the human body. Whey proteins are rich in branched chain amino acids, components that provide energy for people undergoing intense or prolonged periods of exercise. As such whey protein is used as an ingredient for sports, nutritional and energy bars and drinks.

Increasingly, food formulators are taking advantage of whey ingredients functional properties, such as whipping/foaming, emulsification, gelation and high water binding capabilities, to improve the taste and mouthfeel of their new product formulations or replace fat.
