UK firm Waterwise Technology has developed a range of ozone generators with fully serviceable cells for use in food process water applications. When used in food production lines, the WCG ozone generators produce a powerful biocide that can be used as a disinfectant for product washing.

The system also incorporates ozone cell modules that are guaranteed for ten years.

Ozone is generated electrically from air and breaks down naturally to normal oxygen leaving no residual toxins or pollutants. Dissolved in water it provides a strong oxidising disinfectant several times more powerful than chlorine.

Used in fresh produce washing and meat, poultry and fish processing, it provides an effective and practical alternative to chlorine without risk of surface contamination or taint. Ozone is also a powerful surface disinfectant for equipment and production area washdown and cleaning, allowing cold water washdown and eliminating the need for hot water or hazardous chemicals.

"Our WCG generators are compact industrial quality units designed for integration into process systems," said Jon Fielder, Waterwise Technology technical director.

"We have a team of engineers who work with customers prior to installation to design and integrate the ozone system to match the client requirements and factory layout. This ensures that our customers are completely comfortable with the equipment, which is optimised to suit their installation.

"It provides a treatment plant which is much easier to operate than chemical based systems or hot water disinfection and presents them with real operational cost savings."

Unlike many ozone water treatment systems where the generator cell is a sealed entity, Waterwise's technology is designed so that the cell has separate components making it fully serviceable. The WCG ozone generators are designed for use in heavy-duty industrial environments and have the capability of operating continuously at 100 per cent capacity where required.

"Ozone generator cells process a significant volume of air or oxygen > and require regular cleaning and maintenance," said Fielder. "If the cell on a sealed system becomes fouled or has to be replaced for any reason it can cost the customer up to a third of the original investment.

"With our WCG system it is just a matter of cleaning and changing minor components. Ozone technology provides users with considerable benefits over chemical water treatment and it is the safest and most powerful oxidising disinfectant available>"

.Ozone technology in food processing is well established internationally, notably in the USA and mainland Europe where there is tighter legislation on pollution and the environmental impact of chemical biocide discharges to the environment. Popularity in the UK is growing with the increasing focus on the many environmental, health and safety and cost benefits over using chemical processes.
